Map of Croatia is the English-language edition of Auto Karta Hrvatske, a project launched in 2011 to provide clear, reliable maps of Croatian cities, regions, and islands. By bringing the site to English in June 2025, we aim to make trip-planning, and location discovery in Croatia even easier for an international audience.

Origin & legacy

Our Croatian-language predecessor, Auto Karta Hrvatske, is referenced in 100+ Wikipedia.org articles, underscoring the accuracy and usefulness of that shared data foundation. The English version runs on exactly the same, continuously updated geographic database as the Croatian original.

Translation policy

Accuracy in naming is critical. For that reason we deliberately retain official Croatian names for administrative units (županije), settlements, and streets, reflecting the forms published in the Republic of Croatia's official gazette (Narodne novine) and the national Register of Geographic Names.

• Counties & cities - You will see the legally defined county names exactly as they appear in Croatian e.g. Primorsko-goranska županija, Istarska županija - because Croatian law does not provide English translations for these entities.
• Street names - Likewise, streets remain in their official Croatian form (for example, Ulica kralja Tomislava).

By following these standards, Map of Croatia offers English-speaking visitors a map that is both internationally readable and locally precise.

Technology

We rely on modern, open technology to deliver fast, interactive maps. At the core is Leaflet, a powerful JavaScript mapping framework, paired with geographic data from OpenStreetMap, the global open-data initiative. Together they allow us to offer detailed, customizable maps that are easy to use and constantly updated.

In addition to global data, we also use customized GEOJSON files that allow precise mapping of administrative boundaries, including the borders of the Republic of Croatia, its counties, and districts of larger cities. This ensures that our maps are specifically tailored to the Croatian region and always align with the official administrative structure.

Data Sources

To ensure the highest possible accuracy of geographic information, we use a combination of open geographic data and official registers of the Republic of Croatia.
